Analysing vulnerability and resilience to climate change in terms of capabilities in a French alpine valley: A presentation of the methodological approach

A capability-based, people-centred analysis of vulnerability-resilience in the face of climate change in a French Alpine territory, Vallée de la Maurienne

Intervenante : Philippa Shepperd, Pacte - Justice sociale

This research analyses people's vulnerability-resilience in the face of climate change through the lens of the capability approach at the individual and system level in a French Alpine territory, Vallée de la Maurienne. It includes a retrospective, time-series quantitative analysis of people's capabilities based on sufficiency "cut-offs", complemented by a prospective survey-based analysis of people's capabilities and agency as a measure of their individual adaptive potential. The objectives are to: 1) evaluate the change in people's vulnerability over time; 2) assess system resilience, interpreted as system stability and sustainability in generating people's capabilities; 3) analyse people's adaptive potential in terms of people's perceived option and agency freedoms.
