ANSWERING SOCIAL PROTESTS. ITALIAN POLICING IN TRANSITION. This article aims to describe and explain some developments the police system in Italy has experienced for fifteen years. Two main transformations of policing - the ‘proximity' reform and the contemporary shift of the tasks of municipal police forces to the territorial control - seem to be tightly connected with the gradual politicization of the "security issue" during the 1990s. On the one hand, safety is the target of strongly mediatised local mobilizations and becomes a major electoral issue, both at the local and national levels. On the other hand, the distribution of security powers between central government and localities has been more and more at stake in the debate for a federalist reform of the state. The article shows how these local and national dynamics push the two different police forces to change in a remarkably similar and crossed way.Cet article vise à décrire et expliquer certaines évolutions du système policier italien. Deux lignes de transformation de l'action policière ¬- la réforme de la police de proximité et la réorientation des missions des polices municipales vers le contrôle du territoire - apparaissent étroitement liées au parcours de politisation de la « question sécurité » au cours des années 1990. D'une part, la sécurité fait l'objet de mobilisations locales particulièrement médiatisées et devient un enjeu électoral majeur, aux niveaux local et national. D'autre part, la répartition des compétences entre gouvernement central et collectivités territoriales en matière de sécurité devient un enjeu crucial du débat sur le fédéralisme. L'article montre comment ces dynamiques locales et nationales impulsent chez ces différents corps de police des évolutions similaires et croisées.
