Research topics
My research focuses on the role of new approaches to soil quality in land dynamics in rural areas in France. It falls within the fields of social geography of the environment and legal geography. The aim is to contribute to the debate on the transition of rural areas in a predominantly urban society, through the three prisms of land use planning (agricultural, forestry, urban), the production of law, and inequalities in land distribution among users of rural areas. I am currently leading an project on farmland quality assessment in the context of the fermage farmland rental regulation and will soon be starting an ANR-funded project on land concentration in agriculture. I am also interested in Christmas tree cultivation, using the example of Morvan, as well as territorial governance of soil quality (soil districts under the European directive on soil monitoring and resilience).
During my PhD, I focused on the management of access to farmland and relocalized food systems, combining three field studies (Amiens, Lyon, and southern Aveyron). My dissertation (2019 CNFG PhD Award) focused on the strategies deployed by local authorities, a citizen movement (Terre de Liens) and professional organizations (Adear) to facilitate access to land for farmers involved in short local supply chains. In this context, I participated in two research projects: ANR JASMINN (on issues of land justice and land rights) and PSDR FRUGAL (on issues of urban food systems and urban livestock farming) projects. Since then, I have also participated in the ANR ANBioT projetc (on the integration of soil quality in urban nature policies) and led the FoSoMo project on forestry controversies in the Morvan region. More recently, I participated in the Decarb'AuRA project on the legal protection of natural carbon sinks, as well as in the Indiquasols collective scientific study on the provision of a set of soil quality indicators for public action.
Research projects I led/'m leading:
1. ConTerMet - Land concentration in France: new metrics and the production of law [ANR JCJC, 2026-2029]
2. SolFermage - Knowing soils to value farmland? Social relationships and environmental information in the provincial application of the fermage status [Robert Badinter Institute, 2024-2026]

Teaching
My teaching aims to familiarize Masters students with rural land issues and equip them for their future roles in territorial development, knowledge dissemination or study and research. I'm currently teaching in two master's programs: general geography at ENS Lyon and rural development at Univ. Lyon 2.
I am also involved in doctoral training:

• examiner for the PhD dissertation defense of L. Gauthier (Univ. Toulouse J. Jaurès, 2023)
• Member of the PhD committees for M. Girardin (Paris School of Urbanism), R. Delattre (Avignon Univ.), Q. Ellès (Univ. Lyon 2) and C. Dabas (Univ. of Pau).
